Brampton First To Licence Wildlife Removal Companies
Brampton City Council has passed a by-law requiring Wildlife Removal Companies operating in the City have to obtain a licence (Amendment to By-law 184-2023). The licence will require wildlife removal businesses to provide consistent, humane, and accountable practices across the industry with minimum standards and humane exclusion, insurance, record-keeping, and prohibit inhumane or unlawful methods. Currently in Ontario most wildlife removal companies are unlicensed. Anyone can set up a wildlife removal company. It is a wild west and is completely unregulated. The removal companies go in capture the mother and a few days later her young are found orphaned because the young have been left behind. Wildlife Rescue Centres report anywhere from 20% to 40% of orphans that end up in Wildlife Rescue Centers are because of this problem. Brampton is one of the first cities in Ontario to license wildlife removal companies. They are also one of the best in Ontario when it comes to handling wildlife.
Ontario Wildlife Rescue (OWR) works with over 50 Wildlife Rescue Centers (Wildlife Rehabbers) across the province. Wildlife Rescue Centers take in injured and orphaned wild animals, rehabilitate and release them back into the wild. Most Centres are run by volunteers and get no support from any level of government. They are completely dependent on the public and businesses for support. Ontario Wildlife Rescue connects the public with wildlife rescue centers (www.ontariowildliferescue.ca). OWR also help find resources (food, medical supplies and veterinarians) for wildlife centres across Ontario. Ontario Wildlife Rescue is a Federally incorporated non-profit charity (license 8155291-2RR0001).
